Frequently Asked Questions
Tell me more about the yoga.
This trip includes a daily yoga class, either immediately after the ride or in the late afternoon before dinner. Yoga offers an excellent complement to cycling, by stretching your body and calming your mind and restoring you for your next day's cycling. We do not expect you to have any yoga experience. For those new to yoga, this trip offers an excellent opportunity to experience yoga and its benefits. For those who already practice yoga, this is an opportunity to continue and enhance your practice in a peaceful setting.
Tell me more about our accommodations.
We'll be staying at Kalani Oceanside Retreat, an off-the-beaten-path New Age retreat, which offers rustic accommodations in a jungle setting. Rooms do not have telephones or televisions, offering you an excellent opportunity to escape from the bustle of every day life. At Kalani, you can enjoy the hot tubs, sauna, and pool, you can schedule a massage, or you can enjoy convenient access to the ocean and the nearby black sand beach.
What should I know about a "jungle setting"?
A jungle setting means that it is lush and green. It is also means that it is moist and can be damp. You will probably encounter harmless creatures, like spiders and geckos. There are also mosquitoes, so you might want to bring insect repellent.
Kalani is located on the wet side of the island, so some rain is probable. However, rain typically passes quickly. Also, rain in Hawaii is warm. Therefore, riding in a short shower here is not the same experience as riding through a storm in someplace like the Canadian Rockies.
Will we ride on the route of the Ironman Triathlon?
The Ironman is on the Kona side of the island. We are not planning on traveling there during the retreat. However, the Ironman is on October 18. You might consider coming to Hawaii a day early and watching this world class event in person.
What sort of bicycle should I use?
The length and pace of planned rides makes this trip best suited for road bikes.
I am a single traveler. Will it cost me more?
You can request that we try to find you a roommate. However, if we cannot match you with a roommate, you must pay the single supplement.
When do I arrive and leave?
We'll meet for introductions at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, followed by dinner and orientation. We will meet you at the Hilo airport for flights that arrive by 4:30 p.m. If you fly to Kona, you need to arrange your own transportation. Driving time from Kona is approximately 3 hours. Departure is after lunch on Sunday, October 26. We will arrange shuttles to take you to the Hilo airport. If you wish to arrive a day early or stay a day later, we can arrange a special group rate. Please let us know.
